At the National Football Museum Hall of Fame, I met Neville Southall. He asked what I did and when I told him I was a poet he asked if I’d write a poem about him. So, I’ve tried …

Also, I was at the museum last week and there’s an Everton signing day this week - unfortunately I can’t go as I’m working - but Howard Kendall and Duncan McKenzie will be going among others, so I thought I’d write something for them as well. Hope you like them - hope they like them …

PAUL ILLUSTRATES BEANO COVER!! ( one small blob for mankind )

Beano cover with a blob by Paul!

This is a cover for the Beano comic. David Harmer and I were round at Mr Parkins’ house as he was doing some cartoons for us. This pic of Dennis and Gnasher was on his table and he said “Do you want to draw a blob lads?” For the front of the Beano? YES!! Two published poets - but we’re excited about being on the front of the Beano! Big kids or what? My blob is third up from the bottom left hand corner - artistic eh?

DAD’S HAT TRICK CELEBRATIONS

Dad’s Hat Trick Celebrations - cartoon

This is another of my current favourites, always goes down well in schools. It’s going to be in the new TRUTH ABOUT PARENTS collection and again, brilliantly interpreted by David. Hope you like it.

For some reason, I couldn’t get this as a thumbnail, so maybe if you click on it you’ll get the picture of me and Mrs Brown at the National Reading Hero Awards at Number 10 in February. Also, there’s a pic of my lovely wife Sally and I. A good day was had by all.

DO AS YOU ARE TOLD!

Do As You Are Told - cartoon strip

This is one of my favourite pieces / routines in the show. It is going to appear in teh new book - THE TRUTH ABOUT PARENTS - illustrated by the ever wonderful David Parkins. I think it’s the only way this poem would ever work on the page and am really chuffed with it. Anyway, Scholastic would like to use it as part of their Literacy Time Plus magazine as a poster so David coloured it in. How good does that look? Can’t wait for the book and the poster!

Poem for my dad

Let Us Remember You Blonde

for-those-who-we-have-loved-the-most.doc

I wrote this poem for my dad’s funeral. He died very suddenly this year and always had a shock of blonde hair - until just before he died when it turned grey almost overnight. this poem was written on behalf of the whole family really. The other poem was written for my good friend Stewart Henderson, when his mother died, and seemed to fit at the funeral if read straight after Let Us Remember You Blonde …

Original Cover for Secret Staffrooms and Crazy Classrooms

Original cover for Secret Staffrooms

Ages ago, David Harmer and I were going to do a book of our favurite school poems so we commissioned David Parkins to do the cover. The book never happened but he did do the cover - and rather fantastic it is too. I eventually did a book for Lion and used the title but the cover hasn’t been used yet and I can’t understand why - I think it is absolutley brilliant. Kids love it, there’s so much to see. I love the fact that all the things the kids are doing in the classroom, the teachers are doing too!

The Footballer’s Prayer and a couple of photos

Here’s a couple of pics - one with a football and one outside Goodison Park when I was interviewed for the Evertonian magazine. The other is the panel with the Footballer’s Prayer used at the National Football Museum’s exhibition - Poetry In Motion

Dai Davies and family meet a poet they’ve never heard of

Paul and Dai Davies

I was invited to Llangollen Fringe Festival last year to perform and Dai Davies came along with his family. He was Everton’s goalie in the 70s, so I dedicated a poem to him called The Goalie With Expanding Hands.
